KTMB aware of poor commuter service, promises upgrade with new coaches
Friday, November 25th, 2011 - Malay Mail

KLANG: The never-ending problems plaguing Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) commuter service are a constant frustration to passengers relying solely on it everyday.

One of them, Shanaz Zainuddin, 35, claims there have been numerous service disruptions in the Port Klang-Batu Caves line since October.

"It seems the service is getting worst. Some of the problems we endure are the constant delays caused by lack of punctuality or broken down trains and even faulty air-conditioning. What is more, these happen during peak hours."

Shanaz remembers an occasion in October when she was forced to wait when not one, but two trains were cancelled, and another day when the 4.30pm, 5.00pm, 5.30pm and 6.15pm services were cancelled.

She says these delays cause her to reach home late and she is tired of waiting.

Shanaz claims her many complaints on the matter to KTMB have come to a naught.

"KTMB owes me an explanation and I really hope it will takes passengers' plight into consideration and take the steps to improve its service."

KTMB corporate communications executive Siti Badariah Wan Hanafi apologises to SHANAZ and other passengers for the level of service they have to endure.

"We have been aware of the situation, and are in the process of upgrading and improving the commuter services to meet passengers' demands.

"We have to admit KTMB is experiencing commuter coach shortage as most coaches are more than 15 years old."

Siti Badariah says their daily operations are affected by technical problems and service cancellations.

She says the Transport Ministry has bought 38 six-coach trains, which are expected to be operational next year.

"The first train arrived on Sept 22 and is being tested for three months, while the second arrived on Oct 19. Four more will arrive in December."

Siti Badariah says the remaining 32 trains will be arriving by May 2012.
