Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 56: Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him and salute him with all respect.
Allah subhanawatala & Angels also salat upon believers -33:43. He it is Who sends Salât (His blessings) on you, and His angels too (ask Allâh to bless and forgive you), that He may bring you out from darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of Belief and Islâmic Monotheism). And He is Ever Most Merciful to the believers.
Firstly:Meaning of 'Salah' and 'Salaam'.In Arabic the term Salaat has several meanings viz. Rahmat (mercy) Dua (supplication) and Madah (praise).Salawaat is plural of salat
Secondly:"and salaam/salute him with all respect". The meaning of salaam is to offer greetings of peace.
The meaning is: May Allah protect, keep safe and take care of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) & this is applicable when he was alive and after his death.
Allah will love you and forgive you because following the sunnah of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. Allah says, "Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah then follow me , Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (3:31)

Benefits of sending Salah upon Rasoolullah sallalahu alaihiwasallam
Sending Salah is sufficient to relieve distress and earn forgiveness of sins:Hadith At-Tirmidhi recorded that Ubayy bin Ka`b said: "When two thirds of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah would get up and say,(O people, remember Allah, remember Allah, the first blast of the Trumpet has come and will be followed by the second blast, death has come with all its horrors, death has come with all its horrors.)'' Ubayy said, "I said, `O Messenger of Allah, I send a lot of Salah upon you, how much of my prayer should be Salah upon you' He said,(Whatever you want.) I said, `A quarter' He said,(Whatever you want, but if you increase it, it will be better for you.) I said, `Half' He said,(Whatever you want, but if you increase it, it will be better for you.) I said, `Two thirds' He said,(Whatever you want, but if you increase it, it will be better for you.) I said, `Should I make my whole prayer for you' He said,(This would be sufficient to relieve your distress and earn you forgiveness of your sins.)'' Then he said: "This is a Hasan Hadith.''
Amplification of reward, removal of sins and receiving the blessings of Allah. Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam saying: "Whoever supplicates Allah to exalt my mention (i.e., send salah), Allah will exalt his mention (i.e., send salah)ten times and remove from him ten sins and raise him ten degrees." [Muslim]
Abu Talha Al Ansari said, "The Prophet (saws) woke up one day cheerful and beaming. His companions exclaimed, 'O Prophet of Allah (saws), you woke up today cheerful and beaming.' He (saws) replied, 'Yes! A messenger (Angel) of Allah, the Mighty and the Glorified, came to me and said, "If anyone from your Ummah sends you a salutation, Allah will record for him ten good deeds, wipe off ten of his sins, and raise him thereby ten degrees in rank, and He will return his salutation with a similar salutation".' Related by Ahmad.
Jibreel alayhi salaam will send salah and salaam upon you. AbdurRahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said, I came to the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam while he was in prostration and he elongated his prostration and then said, "Jibreel came to me and he said, 'whoever sends blessings (salah) upon you, I will send blessings on him, and whoever sends greetings (salaam) upon you, I will send greetings upon him,' so I prostrated out of thankfulness to Allah.'" [Haakim, Saheeh Al-Albani]
Answering of one's duaa. Most of us do not know that duaa is suspended between the heavens and earth until we send salawat on the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. Umar radi Allahu anhu said, ""Duaa is suspended between heaven and earth and none of it is taken up until you send blessings upon your Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam." [At-Tirmidhi, Hasan Al-Albani] The scholars state that it is recommended (mustahabb) to include salawat in our duaa for the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam.

Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "May his nose soil with dust in whose presence mention is made of me and he does not supplicate for me." [At-Tirmidhi, Saheeh Al-Albaani] Imam Nawawi rahimahullah states the saying 'may his nose be rubbed in dust' means to suffer humiliation and disgrace. That is "may such person be humiliated and disgraced who hears my name and does not invoke Allah's blessings upon me."
Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned but he does not supplicate for me." [At-Tirmidhi, Saheeh Al-Albani]

Jibreel alayhi salaam made duaa against and the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam replied "Ameen" (O Allah, grant it). It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ascended the minbar and said: "Ameen, ameen, ameen." It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you ascended the minbar and said, 'Ameen, ameen, ameen." He said: "Jibreel came to me and said: 'If Ramadan comes and a person is not forgiven, he will enter Hell and Allah will cast him far away. Say Ameen.' So I said Ameen. He said: 'O Muhammad, if both or one of a person's parents are alive and he does not honour them and he dies, he will enter Hell and Allah will cast him far away. Say Ameen.' So I said Ameen. He said: 'If you are mentioned in a person's presence and he does not send blessings upon you and he dies, he will enter Hell and Allah will cast him far away. Say Ameen.' So I said Ameen." Status of wives & Progeny of Prophet Muhammad salla lahu alaiahi wasallam.
33:30. O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits an open illegal sexual intercourse, the torment for her will be doubled, and that is ever easy for Allâh.
31. And whosoever of you is obedient to Allâh and His Messenger SAW , and does righteous good deeds, We shall give her, her reward twice over, and We have prepared for her Rizqan Karima (a noble provision Paradise).
32. O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allâh), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.
33. And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance, and perform As-Salât (IqamâtasSalât), and give Zakât and obey Allâh and His Messenger. Allâh wishes only to remove ArRijs (evil deeds and sins, etc.) from you, O members of the family (of the Prophet SAW), and to purify you with a thorough purification.
34. And remember (O you the members of the Prophet's family, the Graces of your Lord), that which is recited in your houses of the Verses of Allâh and AlHikmah (i.e. Prophet's Sunnah legal ways, etc. so give your thanks to Allâh and glorify His Praises for this Qur'an and

75 He (Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.s)) said: "Do ye then see (the false deities) whom ye have been worshipping

77 For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds;

79 Who gives me food and drink
80 And when I am ill it is He Who cures me;
81 Who will cause me to die and then to live (again);
82 And Who I hope will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgment...
83 O my Lord! Bestow wisdom on me and join me with the righteous;
84 Grant me honorable mention on the tongue of truth among the later generations;
85 Make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss."

Obligatory and Recommended Times to send Salawat
We've established that sending salawat on the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam is a noble deed in Islam, however there are prescribed times for it and times that this act is not recommended or allowed. Furthermore, for specific supplications that the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam taught us, we must only say what he narrated without any modifications.
The obligatory and recommended times are as follows:
1. During the tashahhud in prayer. In prayer we say, "Al-salaamu 'alayka ayyuha'l-nabiyyu wa rahmat-Allahi wa barakatuhu (Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings)," and the salaam is transmitted to him…
84. And We bestowed upon him Ishâque (Isaac) and Ya'qûb (Jacob), each of them We guided, and before him, We guided Nûh (Noah), and among his progeny Dawûd (David), Sulaimân (Solomon), Ayub (Job), Yûsuf (Joseph), Mûsa (Moses), and Hârûn (Aaron). Thus do We reward the gooddoers.

If any one asks Al-Wasilah for me, it becomes incumbent upon me to intercede for him."
[Muslim]
In another hadeeth, Sa`d bin Abu Waqqas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "He who says after the Adhan: `Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah Wah-dahu la sharika Lahu; wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa Rasuluhu, radhitu Billahi Rabban, wa bi Muhammadin Rasulan, wa bil Islami Deenan [I testify that there is no true god except Allah Alone; He has no partners and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger; I am content with Allah as my Rubb, with Muhammad as my Messenger and with Islam as my Deen],' his sins will be forgiven."

[Muslim]
3. When entering and leaving the Masjid.
• Fatima ؓ says that whenever the Prophet of Allah [saw] entered the mosque he recited:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي وَافْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
"I enter the mosque in the name of Allah; Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah [saw]. O Allah! Forgive my sins and open the gates of mercy for me. "
And when he left the mosque, he recited these words:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي وَافْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ فَضْلِكَ
"I exit (from the mosque) in the name of Allah; Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah [saw]. O Allah! Forgive my sins and open Your gates of bounties for me." (Sunan Ibn Majah)
4. Fridays.
Aus bin Aus (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Among the best of your days is Friday; so supplicate Allah more often for me in it , for your supplications will be displayed to me."
He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah! How will our blessings be displayed to you when your decayed body will have mixed with the earth?" He sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam replied, "Allah has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of the Prophets." [Abu Dawood, Saheeh Al-Albani]
5. Daily Adhkar (remembrances) of the morning and evening.
Abu Dardaa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "whoever sends blessings on me ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening will receive my intercession." [Al-Tabarani] This hadeeth is disputed amongst the scholars of hadeeth; Shaykh Al-Albani declared its chain weak while Al-Sakhawi and Imam ibnul Qayyim declared it authentic. However, sending salawat on the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam daily is still recommended based on the hadeeth, Ibn Mas'ood (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: "The people who will be nearest to me on the Day of Resurrection (i.e., receive my intercession) will be those who supplicate Allah more often for me." [At-Tirmidhi, Hasan Al-Albani]
6.Whenever Abdullah bin Umar ؓ returned from a journey, he would visit the grave of the Messenger of Allah [saw] and make the following supplication:السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
"Peace be upon you O Messenger of Allah [saw]!" (Fadal as-Salaah ala an-Nabi)
"Peace be upon you O Messenger of Allah [saw]!" (Fadal as-Salaah ala an-Nabi)
7 It is narrated by Aisha ؓ that the Prophet [saw] after finishing his prayers would recite these words three times:سُبْحَانَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ الْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ وَسَلاَمٌ عَلَى الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
"Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe; and peace upon the messengers. And praise to Allah , Lord of the worlds." (Jami' Tirmidhi)
"Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe; and peace upon the messengers. And praise to Allah , Lord of the worlds." (Jami' Tirmidhi)
The Permissibility of Not Writing Out the Peace and Blessings After Mentioning the Prophet
al-Khatib al-Baghdadi said:
"I saw the handwriting of Abu 'Abdullah Ahmad bin Hambal of many ahadith in which the Prophet was mentioned, and he would not write 'sall Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam' after his name. I was informed that he used to invoke peace and blessings upon the Prophet by his tongue and not in writing."
['al-Jami' li-Akhlaq ar-Rawi wa Adab as-Sami''; 1/271]

Times When it is not Allowed or Disliked to send Salawat
Imam ibnul Qayyim rahimahullah stated,
Sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, although it is one of the best and most beloved of deeds to Allah, every dhikr has its own place and time, where no other can take its place.
Jala' al-Afhaam (1/424)
These times include:
1. When slaughtering the animal.
The sunnah of slaughtering is to say only "Bismillah Allahu Akbar", "With the Name of Allah, Allah is Greater [than everything else]".
2. When sneezing.
It was narrated from Nafi' that a man sneezed beside Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and said "Alhamdulillah was-salaam 'alaa Rasul Allah (Praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah)." Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "And I say, 'Alhamdulillah was-salaam 'alaa Rasul Allah (Praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah)' – but this is not what the Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam taught us. He taught us to say: 'Alhamdulillahi 'alaa kulli haal (Praise be to Allah in all situations).'" [Al-Tirmidhi, Saheeh Al-Albani]
3. When bowing (ruku') or prostrating (sujood) in prayer, or any times in the salah other than the tashahhud.
4. If you come upon an ayah in the Qur'an that has the name or mention of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam.

Writing SAWS/SAS/PBUH etc
Imam Suyooti rahimahullah also affirms this by saying,
"It is disliked to resort to these abbreviations when making salah and salaam on the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam."
Shaykh Ahmad Shakir said,
"It is the absurd tradition of some of the later generations that they abbreviate the writing of 'sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam.'" [Musnad Imam Ahmad]
'Durood' is a Persian word which has been adapted into Urdu. The equivalent for 'Durood' in Arabic is 'Salaah', which means blessings, mercy and supplications. When attributed to Allah , the meaning of 'Salaah' is that He sends His Grace and Blessings on the Prophet [saw]. With regards to the angels and people, it means that they make supplication to Allah to confer His blessings upon the Prophet [sallahualaiahiwasallam].

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 2482 Narrated by AbuHurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him)
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to say, " O Allah, grant me benefit in what Thou hast taught me, teach me what will benefit me, and increase my knowledge. Praise be to Allah in all circumstances. I seek refuge in Allah from the state of those who go to Hell."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a tradition whose isnad is gharib.
